Mikhail Yakimov (pictured on the right) from Bansko won 5th place in the Giant Slalom in the category Advanced – the highest level in alpine skiing at Special Olympics! This is the first Bulgarian athlete to reach this category in the 30-year history of Special Olympics Bulgaria!

Mikhail competed with the best athletes from Austria, Slovenia, Great Britain and the Netherlands, leaving behind representatives from the USA and New Zealand. His coach Georgi Bistrin said after the competition: “Mikhail is extremely stable. The ice cannot stop him! I believe that in the Super Giant Slalom he will be in the top 3!”

We are looking forward to Mikhail Yakimov’s next starts in the Super Giant Slalom on March 13th and Slalom on March 14th!

The 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games take place from March 8th to 16th, 2025 in Turin, Italy. Nearly two thousand Special Olympics athletes and their teams from 102 countries compete in eight sports – alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowboarding, figure skating, dance, short track and floorball. They will be supported by 2,000 volunteers, 4,000 guests and family members. Nearly 100,000 spectators are expected, making the event a global experience.
