During the summer holidays the German media massively advise their audience to visit Bansko in the winter. The weekly newspaper "Die Zeit", "Deutsche Welle" radio and the public TV station ARD present Bansko as a good alternative to the alpine resorts. This is more than just advertising, considering that the ski resorts in Germany are located in the Alps. In the German media there is still some patriotism left, since they recommend Bansko after the expensive Swiss resort St. Moritz.
"Skiing in Bulgaria - this sounds quite exotic. But unlike Switzerland, it's not that pompous at all. Bansko is a picturesque town in the foothills of Pirin, which can be compared with the Swiss Engadin", states the article in "Die Zeit".
The authors point out that "Bansko is located on the narrow-gauge railway track, which slowly moves through the mountain and this journey gives you the impression that you have finally discovered a forgotten world. You will find yourself inbetween small alpine villas with wood-carved eaves. If you prefer to watch instead of being watched this is the perfect place for you. The city is clustered around the magnificent Holy Trinity Church, built of stone. Its old part is very beautiful. Here you can also find a substitute for the Swiss raclette - the Bulgarians have invented not only yoghurt, but they are also famous for their baked cheese. One of its variations is served with hot sour cherries", the German media states.
