On November 5th, 2026, a full-scale joint search and rescue exercise—designated SAREX-26—will take place at Banderishka Polyana between 10:00 and 13:00. The exercise is organized by the Civil Aviation Administration General Directorate, with the participation of the Border Police General Directorate, the General Directorate for Fire Safety and Civil Protection (Sofia and Blagoevgrad regional directorates), the Bulgarian Air Force, HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) unit from Sofia, the Bansko Fire Safety and Civil Protection unit, the Bansko Police Department, Pirin National Park, the Mountain Rescue Service (Bansko detachment and the BRC Mountain Rescue Service’s canine rescue unit), and the "Sveto Blagoveshtenie" Medical Center. The event is supported by Yulen AD and the Municipality of Bansko.

The primary objective of the exercise is to assess the readiness of the participating agencies and to enhance coordination and cooperation among them when responding to an aviation accident and conducting rescue operations in a mountainous environment.

During the exercise, visitors in the area may observe specialized teams and rescue equipment—including helicopters—as well as activities simulating an actual rescue operation. Please note that these activities are part of a pre-planned exercise and are not related to a real-life incident. We urge visitors to remain calm, follow the instructions of the organizers and on-site personnel, and comply with any temporary access restrictions that may be imposed in the area of the exercise.
